Science Alone Won’t Do It! South Africa’s Endangered Humpback Dolphins Sousa plumbea Face Complex Conservation Challenges

چکیده
The Indian Ocean humpback dolphin ( Sousa plumbea ) is “endangered” with likely less than 500 animals remaining in South African waters. Established 2016, the SouSA Consortium a formalised network of scientists and conservationists to combine knowledge research efforts, make coordinated decisions aim conserving species. first collaborative project collated available photo-identification data an attempt refine national population estimate investigate movements between sites. This work was able identify 250 uniquely marked individuals, divided into south-coast (Agulhas bioregion) east-coast (Natal populations. Environmental factors almost certainly play role declining numbers species However, individual threats solutions are challenging as marine environment undergoing significant natural anthropogenic changes major shifts distribution some prey, competitor predator Therefore, we believe that continued investigation potential contributing their interaction will take too long, inevitably resulting another case documenting extinction. With this mind, present results SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis effort help us next steps toward conservation dolphins We unanimously conclude no single cause for rapid decline waters can be identified, cumulative effects multiple stressors, which difficult pinpoint mitigate, impacting numbers. While highlighting need research, suggest shift more action-focused concrete being development Conservation Management Plan input from other stakeholders.

Distribution, abundance and conservation status of the eastern Taiwan Strait population of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, Sousa chinensis
In 2002, a small population of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, Sousa chinensis, was discovered in the coastal waters of the eastern Taiwan Strait. Serious conservation concerns about this population led to a survey of most of the coastal waters of western Taiwan to better understand the status of this population. Surveys were conducted from boats (inshore waters) and a sea-kayak or land-based p...
متن کاملVertebral column anomalies in Indo-Pacific and Atlantic humpback dolphins Sousa spp.
Conspicuous vertebral column abnormalities in humpback dolphins (genus Sousa) were documented for the first time during 3 photo-identification field studies of small populations in Taiwan, Senegal and Angola. Seven Taiwanese humpback dolphins S. chinensis taiwanensis with vertebral column anomalies (lordosis, kyphosis or scoliosis) were identified, along with 2 possible cases of vertebral osteo...
متن کاملSounds of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) in West Hong Kong: a preliminary description.
Vocalizations of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) in west Hong Kong waters were described from 12 recordings in 2010. A broadband hydrophone system recorded sounds. Vocalizations were characterized as broadband click trains, burst pulses, and narrowband frequency modulated sounds, including whistles generally similar to those of some other delphinid cetaceans. A comparison of re...
متن کاملIndo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) in Hong Kong: Modelling demographic parameters with mark-recapture techniques
Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) inhabiting Hong Kong waters are thought to be among the world's most anthropogenically impacted coastal delphinids. We have conducted a 5-year (2010-2014) photo-ID study and performed the first in this region comprehensive mark-recapture analysis applying a suite of open population models and robust design models. Cormack-Jolly-Seber (CJS) models...
متن کاملA Systematic Health Assessment of Indian Ocean Bottlenose (Tursiops aduncus) and Indo-Pacific Humpback (Sousa plumbea) Dolphins Incidentally Caught in Shark Nets off the KwaZulu-Natal Coast, South Africa
Coastal dolphins are regarded as indicators of changes in coastal marine ecosystem health that could impact humans utilizing the marine environment for food or recreation. Necropsy and histology examinations were performed on 35 Indian Ocean bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) and five Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa plumbea) incidentally caught in shark nets off the KwaZulu-Natal coas...
